The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is one of the major botanic gardens in the United States, located in the Bronx in New York City. It covers about 250 acres (100 ha) Bronx Park and is home to some of the leading laboratories in the world of plants. It offers major exhibitions and flower shows throughout the year, drawing more than 800,000 visitors annually.
HistoryLorillard family has most of the land that became The New York Botanical Garden. That area of land and borders shared by the City of New York and set aside for the establishment of a zoo and botanical garden. This park was established in 1891 at the bottom of the Lorillard estate, previously owned by Pierre Lorillard tobacco king. This park creation following the fundraising campaign led by the Torrey Botanical Club and Columbia University botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton and his wife Elizabeth Knight who was inspired to emulate the Royal Botanic Gardens in London. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1967.The New York Botanical Garden's Holiday Train Show has become a seasonal tradition worthwhile for the family, not just in New York, but across the country. With a small scale model trains along the half mile in and about 140 replicas of historic buildings that are built entirely from natural ingredients: nuts, bark, fruits, pinecones, and leaves.
